The standard incandescent light bulb is little changed from the original design invented by Thomas Edison. Until recently the alternative choices were most notable for their drawbacks. Noise, cost, poor color, and poor aesthetics eliminated any advantages for the home user. New electronic fluorescents and halogen lighting are noiseless, instant, and have color often surpassing their incandescent counterparts. Now that the technical problems have been addressed the costs become more competitive every year.
